SUCCESS!!!! Costa Mesa Rejects Troubled Housing Proposal!

Posted By: Chip Ahlswede Legislative Affairs, Advocacy Updates,

Costa Mesa City Council heard from AAOC members in a BIG way on Tuesday as you all generated:

  • Nearly 200 emails to the city council
  • Nearly 20 speakers
  • Approximately 5 industry groups (REALTORS(R), Mobile Home Park Owners, and Apartments united)

All with one singular message -

DON'T FOLLOW THE PATH THAT IS DESTROYING SANTA ANA!

The city council agenda was a full one Tuesday night, and one that had significant impacts on the Multifamily Housing Industry. Two items in particular were:

  • Establishment of a Rental Registry, and
  • Requirements that property owners notice the city of any Unlawful Detainers

Both proposals were rejected by the council citing several of our objects, and some of their own:

  • There were concerns about exposing housing units that were not to code that could result in loss of housing in the community
  • They were concerned about the possibility of the city creating a registry of people that coul be misused by ICE to find illegal immigrants
  • There were concerns that creating a registry of Unlawful Detainers could expose privacy of tenants

In the long run regardless of the reasons that led the council to see the problems with the policy, we are once again in a position where Costa Mesa took the right steps to address problems correctly.

SO THIS IS A BIG THANK YOU TO AAOC MEMBERS THAT HELPED ADVOCATE FOR OUR INDUSTRY!

It is because of YOUR efforts that we were able to be successful in Costa Mesa - and it is what we will need to be successful in every other city moving forward.
