We did it!!!

California voters overwhelmingly rejected Proposition 21 on November 3, 2020 and have once again sent a clear message that they do not support expanding rent control in our state.

Updated statewide election results, 24 hours after the polls closed, indicated that 59.7% of the electorate had voted "No" on Proposition 21 - nearly identical to the final percentage of voters who rejected California's previous statewide rent control measure, Proposition 10, in 2018.

The Apartment Association of Orange County (AAOC) played a significant role in the local and statewide effort to defeat Proposition 21, having raised close to a half-million dollars from its rental property owner and operator members to help inform voters about the threat posed by this ballot measure.

AAOC greatly appreciates those members who stepped up and gave of their time and money to help defeat Proposition 21, which would have crippled the rental-housing industry and made California's housing crisis even worse. The association has now helped to defeat two statewide rent control measures in two years, but we know the tenants' rights activists and other anti-business, anti-property rights interest groups will regroup and continue pushing their progressive agendas in the halls of the State Capitol, in the news, on social media, and in the court of public opinion. This fight will continue in 2021 and beyond and AAOC will be here to protect and defend the rights and interests of its members and stand with its industry allies.

Thank you, again, for supporting AAOC in its efforts to defeat Proposition 21. Your time and contributions were significant and helped to make this campaign successful.

Rent control is on the General Election ballot and the stakes for the rental-housing industry have never been higher.

Proposition 21 would not only expand rent control in California but also empower cities to impose even more restrictive rent control policies of their own.
